What Is a Digital Product? 5 Lessons I Learned from Yoga That Helped Me Build a Digital Product Business

January 10, 20266 min read

Before I built a digital product business, I became a yoga practitioner and then a yoga teacher. As of today, I've spent over 15 years practicing and teaching yoga to people at all levels, from the person rolling out their mat for the first time to the advanced practitioner doing handstands during Sun B flow.

Yoga has taught me discipline, presence, and patience — and it's also given me the mindset I needed to build a freedom-based business online. As any yoga teacher or anyone with a job knows, there's only so much money you can make when you're trading time for money. A digital product business expands the possibilities and facilitates passive income, so you can continue doing things you love without worrying about money.

When I first got curious about making money online, I thought I had to become an influencer or post 24/7 to get noticed. I didn’t realize I could use my existing knowledge to create something simple, digital, and profitable with a digital product business. But what is a digital product, and how can it help you build the lifestyle you're dreaming of (including those daily yoga sessions)?

Let’s start with the basics.

What Is a Digital Product?

A digital product is any product you can create once and sell over and over again, completely online. Think Canva templates, printable planners, digital journals, ebooks, checklists, swipe files, or even mini courses.

You don’t have to be a designer or a tech genius to start a digital product business. As one Forbes writer attests, you also don't need a big team. Most people start solo using tools like ChatGPT and eventually add a virtual assistant or other staff.

If you’ve helped someone solve a problem before, you already have what it takes to create a digital product. A digital product business is perfect for coaches, creatives, service providers, and anyone ready to turn their knowledge, ideas, or experience into passive income.

Now that you know what a digital product is, let me share five ways yoga prepared me for this business model better than any business degree ever could.

1. Your Ego Will Try To Lead

In yoga, the ego can push you to force poses your body isn't ready for. It compares. It judges. It distracts.

In a digital business, ego can sound like:

  • "I have to launch something huge."

  • "It needs to be perfect before I post it."

  • "What if no one buys?"

But real growth (and real income) comes when you lead with alignment, not ego. A simple $27 product that solves a real problem will always outperform a complicated offer created from fear of not being good enough.

Let go of the pressure to prove. Focus on service.

2. Not Every Class (or Post) Will Land

I've taught classes where the energy was off, the students were quiet, or I stumbled over my flow. It didn’t mean I was a bad teacher — it just meant it was one class.

The same applies to digital business: Not every post will go viral. Not every launch will be a slam dunk.

And that’s okay. You’re building something real. Keep showing up. Consistency will get you further than perfection ever could.

3. Simplicity Is Powerful

Some of my most impactful yoga classes were built on the basics: Sun Salutations, breathwork, and intentional movement. Nothing flashy. Just presence.

Digital products work the same way.

You don’t need to build a 12-week signature course right out of the gate. You can create a:

  • 10-page guide

  • 3-step checklist

  • Printable journal

  • Canva template

One problem, one product, one solution. That’s enough.

You can also promote other creators' offers through affiliate marketing, earning a commission when someone buys. It's an even easier startup strategy because you don't have to build something new. You can focus on promoting an already proven offer.

4. Your Energy Speaks Louder Than Strategy

People can feel your energy. In a yoga class, if I show up frazzled or checked out, the whole room feels it.

Online? Same thing.

When you’re creating digital products from a place of pressure, panic, or comparison, your content won’t land. But when your energy is grounded and your offer is aligned, you become magnetic.

Strategy matters, yes. But energy is what keeps people coming back.

5. Stillness Is Strategy

We live in a world that glorifies hustle. But in yoga, some of the most transformative moments come in stillness — in Savasana, in pause, in presence.

Some of my best business ideas have come during walks, meditations, or in those quiet early mornings with my coffee and my fur babies.

You don’t need to grind your way to success. You need space to receive and create.

Digital products are beautiful for this. You create them once. You sell them over and over. Your income is no longer tied to your hours or your output.

You Already Have What You Need To Build a Digital Product Biz

Yoga taught me to listen to myself. To trust the process. To stay rooted when things felt messy.

Building a digital product business taught me the same.

If you’ve ever guided someone through something — even just a conversation with a friend — you’re already a teacher. A mentor. A creator. You already have the spark. All you need is a way to package it.

That’s what a digital product is: a bridge between what you know and someone else’s breakthrough.

FAQ About Selling Digital Products

What exactly is a digital product?

A digital product is a product that exists in digital form—something you create once and can sell an unlimited number of times online. Think: ebooks, templates, planners, online guides, and digital downloads. No physical shipping required.

Do I need to be an expert to create a digital product?

Not at all. If you’ve ever solved a problem or shared a helpful method with someone, you have the foundation for a digital product. It’s more about packaging knowledge than having a fancy title.

What’s the benefit of selling digital products versus physical products?

Digital products have higher profit margins, no inventory, and no shipping, and they can be automated. That means more freedom, flexibility, and scalability.

What tools do I need to create a digital product?

You can start with just Canva and Google Docs. No fancy software needed. If you want to sell it, platforms like Stan Store, ThriveCart, Gumroad, or Shopify are great options — but I also offer done-for-you systems to make this easy.

Can I really make money selling digital products?

Yes! Many creators and small-business owners build consistent income with just one well-designed product. The key is solving a real problem your audience cares about.

How do I know what digital product to create?

Start with what you know. What have people asked you about? What problem have you solved for yourself or others? That’s your zone of genius.
